The first comprehensive type family. Designed by Bertram Goodhue, assisted by Hannibal Ingalls Kimball, director of the Cheltenham Press, who suggested and supervised the face. [Frazier 1925] Further refined by ATF’s chief designer Morris F. Benton (some sources suggest Joseph W. Phinney). Trial cuttings were made as early as 1899, but it was not completed until about 1902, and patented in 1904 by Kimball. Benton produced Cheltenham Bold in 1904 and a score of variations up to 1913. Linotype, Monotype, and Ludlow each have duplicates of a dozen or more Cheltenhams, while Intertype has the same under the name Cheltonian.

ATF produced 23 styles in total: Cheltenham Oldstyle w/ Oldstyle Italic (incl. swash alts) and Bold (1904), Bold Italic, Bold Condensed, Bold Outline, and Wide (1905), Bold Condensed Italic, Bold Extra Condensed, and Bold Extended (1906), Bold Extra Condensed Title, Inline, Inline Extra Condensed, and Inline Extended (1907), Medium w/ Medium Italic and Oldstyle Condensed (1910), Extrabold, Bold Shaded w/ Bold Shaded Italic (1912), Medium Condensed, Medium Expanded, and Extrabold Shaded (1913) [Reichardt 2011]. Additions by others include Robert Hunter Middleton’s Cheltenham Cursive (swash caps) for Ludlow, Sol Hess’s Wide Italic for Monotype, Linotype’s Extra Condensed Italic, and Intertype’s Cheltonian Medium Condensed Italic.
