Univers is a landmark neo-grotesque sans-serif typeface family by Adrian Frutiger (1957), celebrated for its systematic design, clarity, and versatility, featuring a unique two-digit numbering system (like Univers 65 for Bold & Medium Italic) that unified weights, widths, and styles into a cohesive, functional family for the modern "Swiss Style," influencing countless corporate identities and wayfinding systems.
Balloon (typeface)
Balloon is a brush script typeface designed in 1939 by American lettering artist Max R. Kaufmann for the American Type Founders (ATF) foundry. It consists of three italic weights—light, bold, and extra bold—all in all-caps with no lowercase letters, featuring a casual, flowing style suitable for display and signage. Originally developed as a competitor to the 1936 Cartoon typeface by Howard Trafton, Balloon was specifically intended for lettering in comic strip dialog balloons, reflecting the era's demand for playful, readable scripts in popular media. The typeface's working name during development was Speedball, and its lighter weights were sometimes paired with lowercase letters from other fonts for added versatility in typesetting. Within years of its metal type release, Balloon was adapted into wood type for larger-scale printing applications, enhancing its utility in advertising and editorial design. Notably, the extra bold weight gained prominence in the 1980s as the basis for the Nickelodeon television network's logo from 1984 to 2009, cementing its legacy in modern branding. Digital revivals by foundries like URW Type Foundry have preserved Balloon for contemporary use in graphic design, maintaining its whimsical, balloon-like stroke variations.[
